"It's important for me to tell you that your workshop, the drawing exercises  and your mantra of 'b-r-e-a-t-h-e' have been so valuable as I pursue a new direction in - what else - silk scarves!  Watching the magic of the dyes moving and interacting is mesmerizing and so satisfying. I am excited to go into my studio  this renaissance has had a huge impact on my life.  I'm going in a new direction with my clay. Feels good. So, while I will take credit for 'diving in' fiber arts background , I credit you for showing me the path."  That was huge." Barbara

“That was quite a workshop we had at Daniel Stowe. It really stands out – I think it was one of the best workshops/experiences I’ve ever worked with, and having the exhibit with it was wonderful.” Cindy, Education Director

I took Silk Scarf painting class Monday & Tuesday at Garvan Gardens. Highly recommend it! Teacher Jamie Kirkell was excellent! We leaned so much & he was very helpful! What beauty we each were able to create with his guidance!

Orchids and Iris bring forth superlatives from all who behold their beauty. Both are exquisitely brought to life in Jamie Kirkell’s exhibition “Iris and Orchids in The Garden.”

His silk floral paintings are fresh and delightful.  Some of the florals seemingly abstract bring a delightful perspective to the study of both the Orchid and Iris. Embodying the spirit of botanical art by depicting the complete flower, his works  integrates classical and modern influences. However, what is makes his work so alive is his use of colors, design and textures. What comes through is his understanding of how silk interacts, and blends with color and form.

His vibrant paintings are a product of his stay in Java, Indonesia, where he studied batik and textile design under Master Batik artist Bambang Oetoro. His interest in orchid collecting and floral design flourished while he was in the Philippines  with the United States Peace Corps.

I don’t know when I’ve ever enjoyed taking a class more!  I don’t think I could ever get tired of doing this.  Thank you so much for sharing with us.  What started out as an exploration turned into a real discovery.  I think is it is now my duty to pester you and Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden to do another class! Carlisle
